Africa’s Clean Energy & Health Revolution: Billions Pledged, Millions Empowered
Johannesburg made history on November 21, 2025, as Global Citizen hosted the first-ever Global Citizen NOW summit on the African continent. The gathering brought together government leaders, private sector investors, philanthropies, and grassroots advocates to accelerate Africa’s clean energy transition. The summit marked the culmination of the year-long Scaling Up Renewables in Africa campaign, securing commitments that will quadruple Africa’s renewable energy capacity by 2030.
The summit announced projects that will bring electricity to 17.5 million homes and deliver 26.8 gigawatts of clean energy by 2030. With support from Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, the campaign aims to quadruple Africa’s renewable energy capacity by the end of the decade.
Africa’s private sector and energy partners made strong pledges to boost clean power. Companies like Harith General Partners, Octopus Energy, CrossBoundary Energy, ENERTRAG, Scatec, and Sun King announced investments that will deliver gigawatts of solar, wind, and battery storage, powering millions of homes and creating thousands of jobs. Earlier commitments from Globeleq, Energea, Pele Energy Group, TransEnergy Global, and Genesis Energy added further momentum, with plans to expand capacity and bring renewable electricity to millions more households across the continent. Together, these commitments show how business leaders are stepping up alongside governments to drive Africa’s clean energy revolution.
These commitments will change lives by bringing electricity to millions of homes, creating jobs, and improving healthcare. The summit showed how governments, businesses, and communities can work together to solve Africa’s energy challenges. It also highlighted the human side of progress — leaders and cultural icons speaking with urgency and hope about Africa’s future.
